This
period building is mentioned in Hugh Weir’s Houses
of Clare as follows: “A nineteenth-century two-storey,
three bay, wide-eaved hip-roofed house, facing south over
tree-scattered parkland towards Lough Derg, with a central
porch-protected front door. A conservatory adjoins
the east and attached to the north-west is the original,
one-storey gable-ended house. Immediately to the rear is
a courtyard, and there is a farm yard to the north-east.
Almost all the outbuildings have now been converted into
dwelling accommodation by An Oige (the Irish Youth Hostel
Association. […] The main two-storey part of the
house was constructed in the second half of the nineteenth
century. In the Clare Journal in 1901 an advertisement
on behalf of the High Court ran: ‘[…] The house
is a substantial modern house containing 4 reception rooms,
7 beds, bath, kitchen and usual offices. […]’ (Hugh
W.L. Weir. Houses of Clare. Ballinakella Press, Whitegate,
1986, p.200).
Sadly, the house has been neglected for a number of years and
a leak in the roof caused some water damage to the walls of
the adjoining rooms. Also, the house itself has been somewhat
unsympathetically converted; however, its former glory is still
apparent in some of the reception rooms, with impressive ornate
fireplaces, original covings and central ceiling rosettes,
large windows and solid wooden floors. One two-storey extension
to the eastern side seems structurally unsound and is probably
best demolished. Although most of the parkland around the building
does not belong to this property any more, there are still
fine views over Lough Derg and there are a number of mature
trees on the boundary. There is a full planning permission
for another building, containing two potential apartments.
This is a major renovation project, not for the faint-heated!
Full drawings of existing and proposed buildings can be made
available on request. The house stands in a central location
in the village of Mountshannon, local amenities, such as the
local pub, restaurant, café, shop, marina, etc. are
all within walking distance, with the national school, post
office church being not very far away. There is a multitude
of leisure activities available in the area, such as sailing,
fishing, walking, cycling, horse-riding, etc.
